Wandering Alone Through the Peaceful Beauty of Thung Nham
A solo journey through Thung Nham, Ninh Binh, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, peaceful boat rides, and the romantic beauty of nature.
Some journeys do not require a large group of people, a packed itinerary, or endless laughter and noise. Sometimes, all it takes is a small backpack, a camera, and a soul searching for peace. My trip to Thung Nham was exactly that kind of journey.

Thung Nham is located within the famous Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex in Ninh Binh Province, around 12 kilometers from the city center. Many travelers call it “the bird garden among the mountains” thanks to its untouched natural beauty filled with rivers, caves, forests, and towering limestone mountains.
The moment I stepped through the entrance gate, I immediately felt a completely different atmosphere. Everything here moved at a slower pace. There were no car horns, no city pollution — only the sound of the wind, birds singing, and the scent of greenery after the early morning rain.
What I loved most about Thung Nham was its poetic atmosphere. Unlike many crowded tourist destinations, this place feels gentle, romantic, and incredibly suitable for anyone who enjoys traveling alone to fully embrace nature.
One of the most famous experiences in Thung Nham is taking a small boat ride through the waterways to the bird sanctuary.

I arrived quite early in the morning, so there were only a few birds around. At first, I felt slightly disappointed because I had imagined seeing thousands of white birds filling the sky like in the photos online. But eventually, I realized that the peaceful silence itself became the most memorable part of the experience.
The small boat drifted slowly across the emerald-green water. On both sides were dense trees and towering limestone cliffs. The atmosphere felt completely disconnected from the outside world. Simply sitting there and listening to the sound of the oars touching the water was enough to make my mind feel lighter.
After leaving the bird sanctuary, I spent most of my time simply walking around Thung Nham, admiring the scenery and taking photographs.

There were small paths covered in greenery, with sunlight filtering through the trees, creating a cinematic atmosphere. Traveling alone here never felt lonely. Instead, it made me feel freer than ever.

At times, I found myself standing silently for several minutes, watching the water reflect the mountains and the sky. Everything was beautiful in such a soft and subtle way, yet unforgettable.

If you love landscape photography, Thung Nham truly feels like paradise. Almost every angle naturally becomes a beautiful frame.

What impressed me most was that even though there were still tourists around, the area maintained a spacious and relaxing atmosphere. It has not become overly commercialized, which makes the experience much more enjoyable.

Perhaps because I traveled alone, I was able to appreciate every detail more deeply — from the vibrant green trees and the sound of the wind across the water to the golden evening light slowly covering the limestone mountains.

The most beautiful moment was probably sunset. The entire landscape became incredibly soft, peaceful, and romantic. It was the kind of place where I simply wanted to sit quietly for hours, doing absolutely nothing.
At the time of my visit, the entrance fees were approximately:
- Entrance ticket: around 150,000 VND per person
- Boat ride ticket: charged separately depending on the season and number of visitors
If you want to see more birds, visiting in the late afternoon is highly recommended, as that is when the birds usually return to their nests. However, if you prefer a quieter atmosphere and fresh morning air, early morning is also a wonderful choice.
It is also a good idea to bring water, comfortable shoes, and a power bank because there are countless beautiful spots for photography throughout the area.
After walking around all day, enjoying Ninh Binh’s local food was easily one of the best parts of the trip.
Some dishes I highly recommend:
- Crispy Ninh Binh burnt rice served with goat sauce
- Steamed mountain goat with ginger
- Ninh Binh mountain snails
- Eel glass noodle soup
- Yen Mac fermented pork rolls
There are many restaurants around the Trang An and Tam Coc areas offering delicious local specialties at very reasonable prices.
Before coming to Thung Nham, I simply thought it was another beautiful tourist destination in Ninh Binh. But after this journey, it became one of the places I remember the most.
Maybe it was because the scenery felt incredibly peaceful. Or perhaps because, surrounded by such magnificent nature, I finally had a moment entirely for myself.
If one day you feel exhausted by the fast pace of life, try visiting Thung Nham alone.
You might just find the same sense of peace that I found there.
